Newsletter - June 27 2007

Has it really been almost 3 weeks since I last wrote a newsletter?? My, how time has zipped by. Sorry for the delay! Your humble team President recently had ACL reconstruction, so that's the excuse I'll use! For anyone interested, things went very well, I'm off crutches and starting rehab tomorrow!

You know, this is a slow time of the year for us, to be quite honest - at least as far as the team and games are concerned. While the USAFL is pumping around the country, it's slow in Florida. With the heat, many of our students away on summer break, Aussies on our team traveling back to Oz for holiday, etc, etc... No worries though, we still are having weekly trainings, and keeping the footy skills up as much as we can.

So, while it's slow on the playing front, it's not slow administratively. We're still working on AFL sister club status with the Essendon Bombers, hoping to hear something from USAFL President Rob Oliver any day now. We're working on a potential sponsorship with Foster's (through Miller Brewing). Most of you probably know that Foster's in the US is brewed by Molson's in Canada, but I just read an article that, for the first time, Foster's will be brewed in the US - by Miller Brewing. Kind of interesting.

There is also a potential sponsorship with Bombora Vodka, which is a boutique Australian made vodka. This lead come from Cameron Freeman - thanks Cam! Finally, we are trying to contact OzePie/Four'n Twenty to see about official sponsorship with them.

Working these bigger sponsors is a bit of a waiting game, they are tremendously important, but sometimes a bit frustrating as there are a lot of levels of people to go through.

Even though I have mentioned it in the last few emails, I have not received any response. We can always use more leads or even smaller sponsorships from small businesses or individuals. Most people don't really know what it takes for the club to be successful, and with National's not TOO far away, now is the time for us to ask people for help. For us to field a competitive team, to travel, and even to have fun social events for the team which include area Australians, it's never free. What we have accomplished this year is in large part due to people like Red Walker and Alex Mirakian footing the bill for almost everything. If you think you might be able to help, or know a company for us to approach, I strongly urge you to contact me. The money that we raise goes to uniforms, field fees, travel, equipment and socials.

Lastly, best wishes go out to Redback Tim Kleman as he celebrates his birthday today. Happy bday Tim!

MACQUARIE SCHOLARSHIP IN SYDNEY

Image In the next day or so, we will be sending a scholarship application off to US Footy for Cameron Freeman. As you may know, the USAFL in partnership with Macquarie University (in Sydney) gives away a scholarship to a college student for a semester in Australia. While the student is there, going to school, tasting a bit of life in Oz, they also play with the Macquarie footy team, and learn new skills.

Cameron was interested in applying for the scholarship which run March-June 2008. Thanks to help from Tom Simpson, Marc Karver, Danny Harrison, and Trevor Stokes, Cameron is throwing his name into the mix.

The Redbacks have an interesting history with the USAFL and Macquarie Scholarship. Former Redback Justin Valley won it when he was with the Redbacks a few years ago, and USF Student President Danny Harrison won it, and went to Macquarie in 2006.

Let's all wish Cameron best of luck with his application. Winner will be announced around August 1st - I'll keep you informed!

USAFL NATIONALS 2007

This year, USAFL Nationals will be held in Louisville Kentucky on the weekend of October 13th and 14th.

To quote the USAFL Website:

It is a fitting tribute to Louisville to see the return of usfooty to the city that hosted the VERY FIRST game in the USA in September of 1996. To compliment this, the first three National Championships were held in the city of their opponent in that game, their mid west neighbor, Cincinnati.

The growth of Australian Rules Football in the USA since that game has been truly amazing. The first Nationals in 1997 saw five teams compete on one field over two days of exciting footy, and plenty of socializing. This year will see up to 30 mens teams and at least four womens teams compete on four full size fields at the superb Louisville Soccer Park, minutes from downtown Louisville and world renowned locations such as Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.

COOL PHOTOS / WEBSITE

Image Since things are still slow, I again wanted to bring your attention to one of my favorite websites... www.aquabumps.com

Aquabumps is a website ran by Uge (Eugene) Tan from Bondi Beach. It's a surf report, but Uge takes the best beach/surf photos ever. Even if you don't surf, as long as you like great photography, check out his website. You can sign up for his daily emails and receive fantastic beach photography. Don't just take my word on it, check it out! www.aquabumps.com

This winter (in Oz) there have been some storms that have had some of the beaches around Sydney really pumping. The photos are just amazing.
